It’s kind of funny that I’m posting this in the Technology category when this speaker is actually not a piece of technology at all. It’s just a natural piece of wood. Or grass. Whatever bamboo is.
So how does it work? Check it out.
The iBamboo iPhone speaker docks your Apple iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S into a simple piece of bamboo and takes the audio emitted from the phone’s speaker and amplifies it using natural resonance. Electricity required for the speaker: absolutely zero.
Here’s a video of it in action:
So there are a couple slight drawbacks to this speaker, the obvious of which is that it can’t get very loud. The amplification of sound is pretty significant, but you probably wouldn’t be able to, as Eminem so eloquently put it, “lose yourself in the music.” The iBamboo would be perfect for some easy listening in a quiet room, but it’s definitely not made for a party atmosphere.
Another problem that audiophiles will run into is that the iPhone has one speaker. So even though it’s being amplified out of both sides of the speaker, it is originating from a mono signal. No stereo for you. Boo.
So is this thing worth it? It could be. It looks great, and it definitely makes your iPhone louder. I would say it depends on price. The iBamboo is not available yet, but if you’re interested, check out their website at iBambooSpeaker.com.
