Spoiler Warning: Before I begin, I should say that if you haven’t seen Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, you should not watch this music video. No, like really. It will spoil absolutely every reveal in the film. However, if you have seen the film (or don’t care about being spoiled), proceed on.
Lately, I’ve had Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage” stuck in my head. It’s been a few days now. This morning I found myself returning to an excellent fan made music video from a few years ago and replaying this video over and over. Not only because of the song, but because of the way this video is put together. It is just so damn good.
Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West is thought by many to be the definitive spaghetti western by the master of the genre. My personal opinion? The film is a masterpiece, filled with beautiful cinematography, a fantastic score, inventive sound design, and impeccable performances by Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda.
I never would have placed these two together, but JT Helms did. Helms edited together this music video for “My Body is a Cage” comprised entirely of footage from Once Upon a Time in the West. It was a brilliant idea. Check it out.
The combination of the music and visual when young Harmonica falls to his knees is so emotionally stirring. Very impressive.
If you want to see more of Helms’s work, check out his Vimeo page.
Also, a shout out to Jeff Duray who showed me this music video some time ago.
